Wernigerode 2017

Wernigerode - The colorful city in the Harz

At the end of October, I went to Wernigerode. My intention was, that I wanted to visit the ChocolART festival, but at the end, I was more fascinated by the castle and the beautiful timbered houses in the city centre.

The ChocolART festival is the biggest chocolate festival in Germany. The original festival is located in the old town of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg. It was interesting to see the different kind of art, made out of chocolate, from many different countries.

In the city centre, I made a little break to try out some of the delicious chocolates. It was good, that the festival was located around the market place and the City Hall with the Wohltäterbrunnen. The hisoric centre of Wernigerode is also full of beautiful colored timbered houses like the museum "Schiefes Haus". Thats one of the reasons why Wernigerode was called "the colored city in the Harz" by the German journalist Hermann Löns.

Another highlight is the Wernigerode Castle, which was first mentioned around 1213. The castle is located on a little hill, a few kilometers away from the centre. But it was worthwile to walk there to see a beutiful castle and to see all around the city.
