Aachen 2017

Aachen - Gingerbread Paradise on the border to Belgium

After one day in Mönchengladbach, I spend a day in the beautiful city of Aachen, developed from a Roman settlement, where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of Germans from 936 to 1531. Aachen is also a famous city for its gingerbread and its Christmas Market.

The city centre of Aachen is full of historical beautiful places. The first place, I visited, was the Elisenbrunnen, a neo-classical hall, covering one of the city's famous fountains. There are two drinking fountains with the hot water, but since the water is sulfur-containing, the Elisenbrunnen has a characteristic smell of rotten eggs (hydrogen sulfide). There are also many other fountains like the Puppenbrunnen and  the Karlsbrunnen before the Aachen City Hall, or the "Hühnerdieb" and "Fischpüddelchen" monuments.

The city's landmark is the Aachen Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church and one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe. From 936 to 1531, the Palatine Chapel was the church of coronation for 31 German kings and twelve queens. Since 1978, the Cathedral and the Cathedral Treasury are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The  Aachen Cathedral Treasury is a museum of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aachen. The museum houses one of the most important and impressive collections of medieval church artworks in Europe.
