Harz Hiking Tour 2018
Brocken
Hiking Tour - Enjoying the beautiful Harz area
Last year, I went to Wernigerode for the first time to join the
ChocolArt Festival. This year, on 17th November, I went there again to
meet my sister and some friends for doing a hiking tour to the Brocken
and for exploring the old town of Wernigerode. The city of Wernigerode
is quite famous for its Gothic style buildings, including the scenic Town Hall with a timber facade from 1498. After exploring the city center, we decided to take a coffee break at the "Baumkuchenhaus",
which was a bit outside of the city. On the way back to our holiday
residence, we could see the sunset at a little lake and enjoy the
beautiful view to the Wernigerode Castle in the daytime and at night with the moon. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go up to visit the castle this time.
When we stayed at the "Baumkuchenhaus",
we could see the process of making the original Baumkuchen - the
origins of Baumkuchen are a matter of controversy - a spit cake, which
resemble tree rings when sliced. Then, we also tried the Baumkuchen and
it was really delicious. I tried two different kinds - one, covered with
white chocolate and the second one, filled with nougat and covered with
dark chocolate. It's definitely worthwhile to visit the "Baumkuchenhaus" in Wernigerode. We also went to a shop in the center, where they sold "Schneeballen", also called "Tauberkugeln", a round pastry, which is originally from the area of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
On Sunday, we woke up early to take the bus from Wernigerode to Schierke, our starting point for the hiking tour up to the Brocken,
the highest peak of the Harz mountain range with a height of 1141
metres. When we started our walk, it was quite warm, but when we reached
the top of the mountain, after taking a part of the "Harz Witches' Trail", it was windy and cold, so that we took a break inside to warm up again. We could also see the "Harz Narrow Gauge Railway".
During our hike, we often missed the train, but when we were on the top
of the mountain and also on the way back, we could finally see the
beautiful steam train. Moreover, we could see a beautiful landscape
around us, even if many trees were cut down. In summary, the whole
weekend was really amazing!
