Hamburg 2018
Hamburg
- Summer Time in the North of Germany
In July, I made another trip with my research group to the North of
Germany. This time, we explored the beautiful city of Hamburg by doing a
Harbour Cruise and a Free Walking Tour. Moreover, we made an excurison to Airbus in Finkenwerder and we visited the "Dialoghaus".
On Sunday, we met each other in Hamburg and made the Harbour Cruise called "Große Hafenrundfahrt". It was quite interesting to make the cruise and learn something about the history of the harbour in Hamburg. We could also see container ships and had an amazing view of the Elbphilharmonie and the Landungsbrücken of St.Pauli.
Then, we made a wonderful sunday promenade at the Treppenviertel in Hamburg Blankenese at the bank of the Elbe river. It was really beautiful and calm and we could enjoy the afternoon there by having ice cream and some drinks.
The next morning, we started a Free Walking Tour at the City Hall,
which was built between 1886 and 1897 in an architectural style of the
Neorenaissance. After the tour, we came back to the City Hall for seeing
the beautiful inner courtyard with the Hygieia Fountain. By going around the city centre, we passed the memorial of the old Saint Mary's Cathedral, which was demolished between 1804 and 1807, and the Gothic Revival Church of St. Nicholas, which was the tallest building of the world between 1874 and 1876. Nowadays, the church is dedicated as a memorial "to the victims of war and tyranny between 1933 and 1945". After a little break, the tour guide took us to the famous Speicherstadt, from where we made our own walking tour, before we went to the Dialoghaus.
The Speicherstadt in Hamburg is the largest warehouse district in the world, where the buildings stand on oak logs foundations and is located within the HafenCity. It was built between 1883 and 1927 and since July 2015, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Kontorhausviertel and the Chilehaus, a building, which was built in the 1920s in a style of Brick Expressionism. We also went to the "Elphi", one of the largest and most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world. From the viewing platform, it was possible to have a wonderful panoramic view over Hamburgs Speicherstadt and the harbour.
One of the highlights during this trip to Hamburg was the visit of the Dialoghaus, where we made the "Dialog im Stillen". It was an interesting experience to feel like a deaf-mute person and that it can be so easy to communicate with people in different ways, even if you can't speak or hear the words of other people.
