Estonia 2017

Tallinn - Beautiful Old Town and Baltic Sea

Finally, I came to Tallinn - until 1918 known as Reval - in Estonia. The old town of Tallinn is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Tallinn, I visited Toompea - the Upper Town - and All-linn - the Lower Town. The area of Toompea was once an almost separate town. The main attractions are the medieval Toompea Castle (with the Pikk Hermann), today housing the Estonian Parliament), the Estonian Dome Church (Toomkirik) and the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which was built to a design by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in a typical Russian Revival style between 1894 and 1900. It is dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky, who won the Battle of the Ice in 1242 and it is the largest and grandest orthodox cupola cathedral. The Lower Town of Tallinn belongs to the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Major sightseeing places include the Town Hall Square, the City Wall including the towers ("Fat Margaret" (built between 1511 and 1530) and "Kiek in de Kök" (built in 1475)) and the Church of the Holy Ghost.

Moreover, there is the beautiful Kadriorg Palace, a Baroque palace built for Catherine I of Russia by Peter the Great. It was built after the Great Northern War and houses nowadays the foreign art department of the Art Museum of Estonia, the presidential residence and the surrounding grounds include formal gardens and woodland.

In Maarjamäe, a subdistrict in the district or Pirita, I visited the Estonian History Museum with the Maarjamäe Castle, which was constructed by Anatoli Orlow-Dawidow and Robert Gödicke in 1874. Additionally, there is a World War II Memorial - the German War Cemetery.

Arrived in Pirita, I was impressed by the ruins of the Pirita Convent. It was attacked by the Russian troops under leadership of Ivan the Terrible in 1557. They sacked the monastery, looted its riches and burned it down. Pirita Convent was abandoned since then, but adjacent lands were used for the cemetery by the locals.

Then, I went to the biggest beach in Tallinn - the Pirita Beach. It was a beautiful beach, where many people have gone for surfing and kitesurfing.
